School News 2012 - 2013

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Dear Parents,

Robert A. Black Magnet is a Kindergarten through Eighth grade school with two separate locations. K- 3rd grade, 7133 South Coles Avenue and 4th - 8th grade, 9101 South Euclid Avenue.

We are a Math and Science Academy and integrate technology into our core curriculum and extension programs. We offer enrichment activities, a Gifted Science program, the Algebra Initiative and IMSA, as well as an afterschool program.

Currently we are a 2008, "No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School". Also we are a 2009/2010 Illinois Spotlight School.

We strive for excellence and embrace all students regardless of any challenges or special needs.

Citizens of the Month will be recognized at the monthy LSC meeting which takes place every third Thursday of the month. Join us in acknowledging your child's success.

Spotlight Schools Award - 2012 Illinois Honor Roll

Criteria for selecting Spotlight Schools are as follows:

School meets Adequate Yearly Progress for the last two years, 2011 and 2012

At least 60 percent of students must have met or exceeded standards in both reading and mathematics in 2012 and at least 50 percent of students met or exceeded those same standards in the two preceding years, 2011 and 2010

At least half the students enrolled have free or reduced lunch applications.

NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association)

Spring Assessment (April 29th - June 7th)

The NWEA Parent Toolkit was created as a resource and guide for parents. It includes Frequently Asked Questions, Tips for Parents, a list of web sites for parents and kids, and information on Lexile—a tool for measuring text difficulty. We hope you find this toolkit helpful and invite you to have conversations with your school personnel about NWEA's assessment tools.
